Various activities
current location: Tshwane, Gauteng
The last couple of weeks have been fairly busy.
We had another OCMC team visiting the archdiocese, but did not see much of them this time, as I had nothing to do with making the arrangements for their visit, and most of their activities were in Johannesburg, which it becomes increasingly unpleasant to visit except at weekends.
On 16 June the OCMC team spoke at a Youth Day gathering at St Nektarius in Leeuwenkloof, which is called a monastery, though the only monk who was there has left.
Last weekend the parish of St Nicholas of Japan celebrated its patronal festival, postponed from Frebruary because the Archbishop was away then, but something came up at the last minute that prevented him from being there this time as well. After that went to a lunch at my old school, St Stithians, where the hosts were a couple of the senior pupils, and it was much more pleasant that such gatherings usually are, hel away from the school, with people you haven't seen for many years and with whom one no longer has anything in common. This one was held in the school dining room, and one of the old teachers, Steyn Krige, was there too.
I've participated in a synchroblog on what it means to be "missional". Anyone who is interested can find my contribution here, with links to the others.

As far as I know this was the first such Orthodox youth gathering in Southern Africa, made possible because the church had acquired a 25 hectare plot at Leeuwenkop, west of Pretoria, with the aim of eventually having a monastery (or two - one male and one female) on the site, as well as a conference centre and a place for holding youth camps, etc. An interesting thing is that this area, between Pretoria and Magaliesberg, is positively infested with church or parachurch youth camps, conference centres and the like. The picture shows Fr Spyridon and Fr Pantelejmon, and gives an idea of the setting, which is quite beautiful, though now, in mid-winter, the grass is brown and many trees are bare, and also there are lots of places blackened with veld fires.
