Old Christmas Eve at St Thomas's Serbian Orthodox Church

January 6th, 2007 (09:15 pm)
current location: Johannesburg, Gauteng

As we did last year, we're having a second go at Christmas, and I've just got back from the Christmas Eve service at St Thomas's Serbian Orthodox Church at Sunninghill Park, followed by blessing of Christmas trees in the hall. The floor of both ther church and the hall were covered with straw.

The Serbs seem to use oak trees as Christmas trees, and yes, they are all green when they hand them to people after the service, but Fr Pantelejmon told me that in Serbia they are brown, because it is winter there.

Some people came back for bigger ones - it seems that the bigger the oak branch, the bigger the blessing.

Re: Christmas trees

I have never heard of using oaks as Christmas trees :) a good surprise for me :)

Yes, so many people think the size of their "blessing" is the main thing :) but, probably, there is also the matter of decorating their home? sometimes it seems to have an average fir (a Christmas tree) is better, than to have a small one:)

Sigh. It looks nice and warm there. I wish I could say the same about Chicago! Joyous Feast!

Hottest day of the year.

On the way home after the Liturgy today I set the car airconditioner at 21 degrees -- the outside temperature was 36.
